Doug's Take

"I stock this hook because it's the one I reach for when I'm Texas rigging soft plastics in cover. The wide gap is what matters — it gives you full point exposure when you bury the tip back in the bait, and it still drives through cleanly on the hookset. These are the hooks I rig Doug's Custom Lures plastics on."

The Hook

Built For Texas Rigging. Three Sizes For Every Plastic.

The VMC 7317BN Black Nickel Wide Gap Worm Hook is the hook Doug rigs his soft plastics on. Extra wide gap geometry, 3X strong hi-carbon forged steel, cone-cut needle point, Z-lock offset locking bend, and a ringed closed eye. Available in 3/0, 4/0, and 5/0 to match the full range of soft plastic profiles — from lighter finesse worms up to larger creature baits.

The wide gap is what matters most in a Texas rig application. When the hook point is buried back in the bait for a weedless presentation, that gap keeps the point close to the bait surface so it drives through cleanly on the hookset. A hook that's too narrow means missed fish. The 3X strong wire means you're not bending out when you load up on a fish that's already tangled in cover.

This is a utility hook. It earns its spot in the box by doing one thing right every time: getting the soft plastic bait in front of bass and sticking them when they bite.

Extra Wide Gap

The wide gap between the point and shank gives full point exposure even when the hook tip is buried in a soft plastic for a weedless presentation. More gap means more bite on the hookset — the hook drives through the bait cleanly and into the fish. That gap geometry is what separates an EWG from a standard offset hook and why it's the right choice for any Texas rig application in cover.

3X Strong Forged Construction

Hi-carbon steel, forged and 3X reinforced wire. Built to handle heavy line, heavy cover, and the torque of setting the hook hard on a fish that's already in the brush. These aren't light-wire finesse hooks — they're designed for the situations where you're pulling fish out of places that would straighten a standard hook.

Z-Lock Offset Bend

The Z-lock bend at the shank is a keeper system built into the hook itself. It grips the nose of the soft plastic and holds it in position through repeated casts, fish, and contact with cover. A bait that slides down the shank kills your presentation and wastes time re-rigging. The Z-lock keeps the bait where it started.

Cone-Cut Needle Point

The cone-cut needle point is VMC's chemically sharpened point geometry — designed for fast, clean penetration with minimal force on the hookset. On light to medium-heavy tackle, a sharp point does most of the work. These are sharp out of the pack and stay sharp longer than a standard ground point.

On-Water Notes
  • Match the hook size to the bait, not the fish. A 3/0 is right for finesse worms and lighter profiles. A 4/0 handles most standard Texas rig applications. Step up to 5/0 for larger, thicker soft plastics where you need more gap to clear the bait on the hookset.
  • Bury the point all the way back and keep the tip just barely under the surface of the plastic for a truly weedless presentation. Half-buried is not weedless — it'll snag on the first blade of grass. Go flush with the surface and the hook will still drive through cleanly when you load up.
  • For pegging the weight, a toothpick peg or a rubber bobber stop works. Peg it when punching mats. Leave it free-sliding on open flats and weedline edges — the bait gets more action on the fall.
  • Fluorocarbon is the right line choice for most Texas rig situations. It sinks, it's low-visibility, and it transfers enough energy to drive the hook home. 12–17 lb for most applications; 20+ when you're punching.
  • Check the point before every trip, especially after any contact with rock or hard cover. A hook that grabs your thumbnail is sharp enough; one that slides off needs a sharpener or replacement. Ten seconds — don't skip it.
