Doug's Take

"The 3/16 is what I reach for most of the time when I'm Texas rigging in cover. The weight choice is the part most people overthink — pick the lightest sinker that still gets your bait into the zone, and let the plastic do the work. These slip sinkers do exactly what they're supposed to do."

The Sinker

Built For Texas Rig. Two Weights For Every Situation.

The Doug's Custom Lures Slip Sinker Bullet Weight is the original Bullet Weights slip sinker — built for Texas rig fishing and weedless applications where your presentation lives or dies by how cleanly your terminal tackle moves through cover. The tapered bullet profile threads through grass, timber, and dock structure without fouling, and the slip design keeps line moving freely through the center bore so the soft plastic works on its own.

Available in 3/16 oz and 1/4 oz, sold in packs of 8. The 3/16 oz is the standard for most open water Texas rig presentations — weedlines, docks, and timber in 4–10 feet of water. The 1/4 oz gives you more depth control and a faster fall rate when fish are holding deeper or the cover is thick enough to need more punch-through weight.

This is pure utility terminal tackle. The weight choice and knowing when to peg vs. free-slide are the two decisions that matter.

Bullet Profile

The tapered bullet shape isn't cosmetic — it's functional. That nose-forward taper slips through grass stems, navigates past brush, and punches through mat edges without fouling. The bullet profile is why this sinker became the standard for Texas rig and weedless fishing.

Slip Design

The line runs freely through the center bore before the hookset. That slack between sinker and hook is what gives the soft plastic its natural fall action — the bait can glide, wobble, and flutter independently of the weight. Peg it when you need sinker and bait to travel together. Leave it free when you want the bait to work on its own.

Size Selection

3/16 oz is the standard — right for most open water Texas rig applications, weedlines, and dock fishing with soft plastics. Step up to 1/4 oz when you need a faster fall, more depth control, or are working water deeper than 8 feet. Use the lightest weight that gets you to where the fish are.

Lead Construction

Lead's density is why it's still the material of choice for slip sinkers. More weight in a smaller profile than any other common material — that bullet stays compact and slips through cover cleanly. Natural lead finish, no coating to chip or flake off during repeated contact with rock, wood, and hard cover.

On-Water Notes
  • Know when to peg. Peg the weight tight to the hook eye when you're punching mats, flipping into timber, or pitching into any heavy overhead cover where you need sinker and bait to enter the same hole. A rubber bobber stop or toothpick does the job. Leave it free everywhere else.
  • Match weight to depth and cover. 3/16 oz is right for most shallow to mid-depth presentations — soft plastic on a weedline, around docks, or along grass edges. Go to 1/4 oz when you're working deeper structure, need a faster fall, or are punching through thicker cover.
  • On a free-sliding setup, watch your line. Most bites happen on the fall before you ever move the bait. The sinker hits bottom first, then the bait settles. That pause is when they eat it — watch for the line to jump, tick, or go slack.
  • Straight rigging makes the difference. On a Texas rig, the sinker only works as well as the hook setup below it. A bait that's crooked on the hook will spiral and spin regardless of the sinker. Take the extra few seconds to rig the plastic straight — it's the part anglers skip most.
  • Fluorocarbon runs through lead cleaner than braid. For most Texas rig applications, fluorocarbon is the right call. Low visibility, sinks naturally alongside the bait, and transfers hookset energy efficiently. 12–17 lb for most presentations; 20+ when punching.
