Wind &
Reaction

Wind isn't a problem — it's an advantage. Doug always seeks out the wind-blown areas of a lake. Current activates fish, and activated fish eat moving baits. Here's how he works it from the surface down.

Moving Baits

Slight chop to small waves — fish are activated and looking up. Get a moving bait on the wind-blown bank and cover water. Buzzbait and Boogie Blade are interchangeable here; both work, both cover water fast.

Doug's Take
"I will always seek out the wind-blown areas of a lake. Wind creates current and activity in the water. When there's a slight chop to small waves, I start with a buzzbait or Boogie Blade. The fish are activated — give them something moving."

Option 2
Boogie Blade JigFlash and thump just under the surface
Condition
Slight chop to small waves
Where
Wind-blown banks and shorelines
Strategy

Find the bank the wind is blowing into and work it. Both baits cover water fast and produce reaction strikes from fish that are already activated by the current. The buzzbait creates surface commotion and draws fish up; the Boogie Blade runs just below and gives off constant thump and flash. Either will work — match to what's in front of you. If fish are visible near the surface, buzzbait. If they're a foot or two down, Boogie Blade.

Approach 02

Rip & Reaction

Get the tube down into the vegetation and bottom structure, then rip it free. That sudden burst triggers a reflex strike from fish that might not be actively feeding. Wind gives you cover — fish are less wary and the ripple masks your presentation.

Doug's Take
"I also fish a tube with a heavy weight and rip it off the bottom and vegetation. Wind is your friend here — it activates fish and gives you cover. That sudden rip is a reaction trigger they don't think about, they just eat it."

Tube Jig Head — heavy
Bait
Technique
Let it sink into weeds, then rip free
Line
15–20 lb fluorocarbon or 30 lb braid
Strategy

Cast it into or along the weedline and let the heavy head take it down into the vegetation. Once it's sitting on or in the bottom, snap the rod tip up hard to rip the tube free — then let it flutter back down on slack line. That sudden escape action triggers fish that aren't actively feeding. The wind helps mask the splash and gives fish less time to scrutinize the bait before they commit. Most bites come on the fall right after the rip.
