Doug's Take

"The Boogie Blade is a bait I built for situations where I need to cover water fast and trigger fish that won't commit to something slow. That blade thump gets their attention at range, and the skirt seals the deal when they close in. I fish it on a steady retrieve, I run it parallel to dock faces, I burn it over grass edges — it adapts to wherever the fish are and whatever mood they're in. When bass are moving, this is the first bait I reach for."

The Bait

Cover Water. Trigger Fish. Three Weights.

The Doug's Custom Lures Boogie Blade is a full-skirted bladed vibrating jig built to cover water fast and trigger reaction strikes from bass and pike that won't commit to something slow. A single steel blade produces a wide, consistent thump — the kind of lateral-line pressure that pulls fish from a distance before they can even see the bait.

Three head weights let you dial the depth and fall rate to the conditions. Three blade finishes give you control over how much flash the bait produces. The full silicone skirt delivers a bold, slab-bodied profile that mimics the bluegill and perch bass and pike are hunting in grass and shallow cover.

Steady retrieve, parallel to cover, burned across a wind-blown flat, or slow-rolled near the bottom — the Boogie Blade adapts to wherever the fish are. Made in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Steel Blade Thump

The single steel blade produces a wide, consistent thump that displaces water and triggers lateral-line responses from bass and pike at longer distances. You feel the blade working at the rod tip — if it loads up with grass, you know immediately and can clear it with a sharp snap before it costs you a cast.

Full Silicone Skirt

The full silicone skirt delivers a bold, slab-bodied profile sized to mimic bluegill, perch, and other panfish. It breathes and pulses at slow retrieves, giving the bait a swim-jig quality even while the blade is thumping. Fish that come in on the vibration commit to the profile.

Three Weights, One Bait

The 1/4 oz runs shallow and slow for fish high in the column. The 3/8 oz is the all-around workhorse for mid-depth cover and moderate wind. The 1/2 oz drives deeper and holds contact in wind or current — the call when fish are on deeper grass edges or chunk rock.

Blade and Eye Options

Gold amplifies warm-tone colors in stained water. Nickel produces a cooler flash for clear water and shad-style color families. Black eliminates flash entirely — lets the thump do the work in muddy water, heavy overcast, or pressured fisheries. Eye color (red or silver) completes the baitfish profile.

On-Water Notes
  • If the blade goes silent at the rod tip, clear it immediately. A sharp snap usually knocks the grass free without burning the cast — keep moving and stay in the strike zone.
  • Deflect off cover on purpose. When the bait contacts wood, rock, or a weed edge and kicks sideways, the action changes for a half-second — that reaction moment is when a lot of bites happen. Aim for contact, not avoidance.
  • In cold water, size selection matters more than color. Drop to the 1/4 oz and slow the retrieve right down — a cold bass will follow a burned Boogie Blade and never eat it, but will commit to a slow-rolled one.
  • Pike respond aggressively on weed-edge retrieves. If pike are a realistic target, step up to heavier fluorocarbon or a short wire leader and check the hook point regularly — pike's bony mouth is hard on hook points.
  • A compact trailer is the right adjustment when fish follow and turn off. A 2.5"–3" craw or chunk slows the fall rate slightly, adds profile bulk, and gives finicky fish a second target. Keep it proportional — a large trailer overloads the hook gap and kills the blade action.
